I Need a Certified Translation. Wait, but who certifies the translator?

When clients request a certified translator or interpreter, they often emphasize the need for “certification” but aren’t always clear on who or what body does the certifying. In Malaysia, two main recognized bodies oversee translator certification:

The Malaysian Translator Association, established under Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP)—a statutory body under the Ministry of Education—plays a vital role in the translation industry. PPM is also a proud member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).

PPM-certified translations are recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government bodies in Malaysia, making PPM membership a hallmark of quality and credibility in the industry.

Another key body is ITBM—administered by the Ministry of Education—which oversees translation and interpretation services across Malaysia. ITBM is particularly focused on academic and book publication-related translations.

At SpeakUp, our translators and interpreters are certified by both of these bodies, making us qualified to serve our clients with our comprehensive language solutions.

How about Court-Certified Translators?

Many wonder about translators certified by the courts. The truth is, courts in Malaysia do not “certify” translators or interpreters. However, they do appoint interpreters for criminal cases.

At SpeakUp, we train our interpreters in professional language skills and supply them to the Foreign Interpreters’ Service unit under the Malaysian judiciary (Kehakiman Malaysia). This unit assigns interpreters to criminal cases throughout the country.

For civil matters or business dealings, we also offer certified translations and interpretation services. If you’re looking to connect with a broader audience, serve diverse clients, or expand your business into foreign markets, you can count on SpeakUp for expertise and dedication.

Let’s build bridges through language!
